AMPA receptor GluA2 subunit defects are a cause of neurodevelopmental disorders.

2019

AMPA receptors (AMPARs) are tetrameric ligand-gated channels made up of combinations of GluA1-4 subunits encoded by GRIA1-4 genes. GluA2 has an especially important role because, following post-transcriptional editing at the Q607 site, it renders heteromultimeric AMPARs Ca2+-impermeable, with a linear relationship between current and trans-membrane voltage. Here, we report heterozygous de novo GRIA2 mutations in 28 unrelated patients with intellectual disability (ID) and neurodevelopmental abnormalities including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Rett syndrome-like features, and seizures or developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). In functional expression studies, mutations lead to a dec…

Locust neuropeptides stimulating sex pheromone production in female European corn borer moth, Ostrinia nubilalis

1990

Abstract The presence of a pheromonotropically active hormone (PBAN-like substance) from locust organs, ( Locusta migratoria ) has been demonstrated. Extracts of brain, corpora cardiaca, corpora allata, suboesophageal ganglia and thoracic ganglia of L. migratoria caused highly pheromonotropic responses in decapitated females of the European corn borer moth ( Ostrinia nubilalis ). The highest activity per unit weight of tissue was found in the corpora cardiaca and corpora allata of the locust followed by the brain plus suboesophageal ganglion of O. nubilalis . Following 8 days of disconnection, separating the corpora allata from the corpora cardiaca and suboesophageal ganglion, the pheromono…

MODULATION OF BLADDER α1-ADRENERGIC RECEPTOR SUBTYPE EXPRESSION BY BLADDER OUTLET OBSTRUCTION

2002

Purpose: α1-Adrenergic receptor (α1AR) antagonists are effective for relieving obstructive and irritative symptoms in patients with bladder outlet obstruction. While the α1aAR is responsible for prostate smooth muscle relaxation and outlet obstruction relief, to our knowledge the mechanisms underlying the relief of irritative symptoms remain to be determined. Therefore, we investigated mechanisms by which bladder α1AR subtypes may be involved in this process.Materials and Methods: We studied 42 rats, including 6 unoperated controls, 17 sham operated controls and 19 obstructed animals. Animals were characterized for baseline voiding pattern, followed by surgical intervention or sham surgery …

The heparin-glutathione test: an alternative to the hypo-osmotic swelling test to select viable sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection

1998

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the heparin-glutathione test (HEGLUT) for the selection of viable sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Design: A prospective study. Setting: Department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Valencia and Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad. Patient(s): Semen samples from healthy donors and patients with infertility. Intervention(s): Sperm samples were kept in culture for different periods in Ham's F-10 medium supplemented or not supplemented with heparin, reduced glutathione (GSH), or a heparin-GSH mixture. Control and heparin-GSH–treated spermatozoa were injected into hamster oocytes. The HEGLUT and ICSI were performed. Main O…

Multixenobiotic resistance efflux activity in Daphnia magna and Lumbriculus variegatus

2015

Multixenobiotic resistance is a phenomenon in which ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family proteins transfer harmful compounds out of cells. Daphnia magna and Lumbriculus variegatus are model species in aquatic ecotoxicology, but the presence and activity of ABC proteins have not been well described in these species. The aim of this work was to study the presence, activity, and inhibition of ABC transport proteins in D. magna and L. variegatus. The presence of abcb1 and abcc transcripts in 8–9-day-old D. magna was investigated by qRT-PCR. The activity of MXR in D. magna and L. variegatus was explored by influx of the fluorescent ABC protein substrates rhodamine B and calcein-AM, with and without…

Virgins in the wild: mating status affects the behavior of a parasitoid foraging in the field

2008

In haplodiploid organisms, virgin females can produce offspring, albeit only sons. They may therefore face a trade-off between either: (1) searching for hosts and producing sons immediately; or (2) searching for mates and perhaps producing both sons and daughters later in life. Although this trade-off raises a theoretical interest, it has not been approached experimentally. The objective of this article is thus to document the effect of mating status on the foraging behavior of a haplodiploid parasitoid. For this, we recorded the behavior of virgin and mated female Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) after being released, in the field, on a colony of their aphid hosts. Half of…

Morphological and Postural changes in the foot during pregnancy and puerperium : a longitudinal study

2021

The aim of this study is to observe the morphological and postural changes to the foot that take place during pregnancy and the puerperium. Method: In this descriptive, observational, longitudinal study, we analysed 23 pregnant women, with particular attention to morphological and postural aspects of the foot, at three time points during and after pregnancy: in weeks 9-13 of gestation, weeks 32-35 of gestation and weeks 4-6 after delivery. The parameters considered were changes in foot length, the Foot Posture Index (FPI) and the Hernández Corvo Index, which were analysed using a pedigraph and taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI). The same procedure was conducted in each review. Re…

TOX3 regulates neural progenitor identity

2016

The human genomic locus for the transcription factor TOX3 has been implicated in susceptibility to restless legs syndrome and breast cancer in genome-wide association studies, but the physiological role of TOX3 remains largely unknown. We found Tox3 to be predominantly expressed in the developing mouse brain with a peak at embryonic day E14 where it co-localizes with the neural stem and progenitor markers Nestin and Sox2 in radial glia of the ventricular zone and intermediate progenitors of the subventricular zone. Tox3 is also expressed in neural progenitor cells obtained from the ganglionic eminence of E15 mice that express Nestin, and it specifically binds the Nestin promoter in chromati…

Prospective risk of stillbirth and neonatal complications in twin pregnancies: systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Twin pregnancies are at increased risk of stillbirth. Uncomplicated twin pregnancies are commonly delivered earlier to prevent stillbirth; however, there is a risk of neonatal complications associated with being born prior to 39 weeks’ gestation. The optimal gestational age for delivery in twin pregnancies is unknown and likely varies by chorionicity. The present study aimed to determine the prospective risk of stillbirth in women with uncomplicated monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies, and neonatal mortality risks, when delivered beyond 34 weeks of gestation. Data on twin pregnancies that reported rates of stillbirth were obtained from MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. Separ…

Residential Exposure to Outdoor Air Pollution during Pregnancy and Anthropometric Measures at Birth in a Multicenter Cohort in Spain

2011

Background: A growing body of research suggests that prenatal exposure to air pollution may be harmful to fetal development. We assessed the association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and anthropometric measures at birth in four areas within the Spanish Children’s Health and Environment (INMA) mother and child cohort study. Methods: Exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and benzene was estimated for the residence of each woman (n = 2,337) for each trimester and for the entire pregnancy. Outcomes included birth weight, length, and head circumference. The association between residential outdoor air pollution exposure and birth outcomes was assessed with linear regress…
